Can You Trust The Wikipedia?

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

Trust - reliance on the integrity, strength, ability, surety, etc., of a person or thing; confidence.

How confident are you that a particular Wikipedia page has reliable information? How sure are you in the ability of all the people who may have edited that page? Thanks to Luca de Alfaro and colleagues at the University of California, Santa Cruz you may soon be able to know which parts of a given Wikipedia page you can and can’t trust.

List Of 1,000 Web 2.0 Apps

Wednesday, August 15th, 2007

Are you using social media to connect with potential customers and clients? Do you want to, but don’t know where to spend your time?

One of the reasons I’m not a big player in social media is because I haven’t found the social sites I connect with. I use del.icio.us to bookmark pages and I’ve set up a few profiles on the usual top sites, but none of the communities has ever called out to me to participate. The more active you are on a particular social media site the better you can market yourself by making connections. The problem is finding the sites you want to interact with. If you find yourself in a similar position have a look at the Web 2.0 Top 1,000 List!.

Digg + Microsoft = ?

Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

If you built a community around your site that showed a clear dislike for a certain company would you choose to display ads from that company? If you came across a community that was hostile to your company would spend your advertising dollars there? Neither would I, but both Digg and Microsoft think it’s a good idea.

Social Networking Made Simple

Wednesday, July 11th, 2007

Do I have to tell you that social networking is an important part of marketing yourself, your site, and your business? I didn’t think so. Sometimes, though, I think we can all use a reminder of what social networking is fundamentally all about. Fortunately for us The CommonCraft Show has created a good video that explains very simply what a social network is and why it works so well online.

At Digg, The Inmates Now Run The Asylum

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

During my routine travels through the blogoshphere yesterday I happened upon a post at Pronet by Muhammad, The Reason Why Digg Removed That Story, and after a read and saving the link for Friday’s This Week In SEO post, I promptly moved on to the next blog awaiting me. It wasn’t until this morning that I realized the revolt that was going on over at Digg about the story in question. Shows what I know huh?

Rumors And News From Social Media And Search

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Maybe it’s everyone posting more the week after SES or maybe it was just a big week for news, but when I looked at the links I’ve collected for tomorrow’s This Week In SEO post I realized I had gathered a lot more than usual and it was going to be hard to cut some. In order to keep the links tomorrow somewhat manageable I thought I’d offer some of them tonight in the form of three big stories.

Review Of The Webmaster-Talk Forums

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

I normally don’t do a lot of reviews, but Tim, the owner of Webmaster-Talk recently asked members with a blog to review the forum. Since Webmaster-Talk has given a lot to me over the last year I wanted to give something back to Tim and to the forum.

How Many Social Media Icons Is Too Many?

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

As some of you know I’m working on a redesign of my site. Part of the reason for the new design is optimizing the site more for social media, including the use of bookmarklets at the bottom of posts. This afternoon I did some searching to find some icons I could grab and use in Photoshop to see how they fit with the design. I found the images I was looking for, but I also found a lot of negative sentiment about sites that use social media icons.

Digg And SEO Don’t Play Well Together

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

You may have heard that recently many seo and marketing related sites are getting banned by Digg for the scandalous offense of being seo and marketing related sites.

I first came across the phenomenon earlier this month when Matt posted his URL Has Been Reported By Users And Cannot Be Submitted To Digg at This Time. At the time I didn’t know the reason for the ban nor did Matt, though I admit I had some suspicions. A couple of weeks later in the post script to 21 Traffic Triggers for Social Media Marketing, Brian Clarke of CopyBlogger fame mentions the post making the front page of Digg whereupon the editors immediately took it down.

Social Media Optimization (SMO): The Next Phase Of SEO

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

I mentioned it my previous post, but the term social media optimization or SMO may be new to people and I thought it deserved more in depth coverage. SMO is a relatively new term to describe a practice that has been going on for awhile. You might notice that I’m not doing many of these things on my own site so this post is more of a do as I say rather than do as I do. I will be implementing many of these suggestions though, with a new redesign in the coming weeks and months and I am happy to say I do practice many of the rules of SMO, if not all of them yet.
