I remember that post by Maki. He built his audience mostly through social media like he says. I agree it shows that there's more than one way to build traffic into a site. Do you read <a href="http://www.skelliewag.org" rel="nofollow">Skellie's blog</a>? She built much of her success through guest blogging. The road to me subscribing to her blog was similar to what made me subscribe to Chris Garrett's blog. With both of them I just kept coming across quality content on a variety of blogs in a relatively short period of time. I think the majority of guest posts I've done didn't drive a lot of direct traffic right away, but most will drive a few visitors month after month.
