Last week we looked at the css flexible box module, one of the new css tools to help with site layout. The css multi-column layout module is another that also helps with site layout and has even better support than flexible boxes.

CSS offers several tools to help with site layout. Over the years we’ve worked mainly with floats, positioning, and margins, but let’s face it, most of us would like more. Fortunately css3 is giving us more tools for layouts. One of those tools is the flexible box.

Centering elements vertically with css is something that often gives designers trouble. There are however a variety of methods for vertical centering and each is fairly easy to use. Today I want to present 6 of those methods.

A flexible layout isn’t all that flexible if some of the component parts are fixed. Text easily reflows as it’s container resizes, but what about images and other media? How do we make them flexible to keep our layout flexible?

Flexible layouts are created by using relative measurements as opposed to absolute measurements. The question is relative to what? With elastic layouts the measurements are set relative to something internal to the design, usually the size of the type.
