Maybe SEO Standards Aren’t Such A Bad Idea

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

I’ve been thinking a lot about the idea of seo standards since my last post on the subject. Initially I was set completely against standards, thinking them both impossible to enact and basically unnecessary. I’m still not sure if a standards body is feasible, but I am beginning to rethink my stance somewhat or at least I’ve begun to see cases where standards could prove useful.

Standards? We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Standards…Do We?

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Every so often the subject of SEO standards makes the rounds through the community. Are standards necessary? Would they help or hurt the industry? One of the sessions at SMX West last month led to a recent post by Jill Whalen arguing against the need for standards which is raising the issue again. Two posts after Jill’s in favor of standards are also generating discussion. I’ve written in the past that I don’t think SEO should be regulated, but there’s more to the debate and I wanted to mention a few points here and ask a few questions of everyone.

SEO Is The High School Cheerleader

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

Imagine you’re back in high school (painful for some I know). You’re parents are going away for the weekend and you want to have a party; a big party. You want as many people as possible to attend. Unfortunately you only have one invitation to hand out, which asks the person receiving it to invite more friends. There are three people you genuinely like and hope will come to your party, but you can only give out the one invitation. The first person is the school’s computer geek, the second is your English teacher, and the third is the head cheerleader. Who gets the invitation?

2008 SEMMY Nominee

I’m not quite sure when and I’m not quite sure how, but a post I wrote back in late August has been nominated for a SEMMY Award. What’s a SEMMY you ask? Why only the greatest award in all of search engine marketing. What’s that? It can’t be such a great award since I was nominated? Thanks for the love and the vote of confidence. Ok, ok, what exactly is a SEMMY?

Should SEOs Work For Commission?

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

Would you offer your seo services for commission only? As a small business owner would you request someone to market your site based only on how many sales you make? The question of commission based seo services arose in a thread on the Small Business Forum where the original poster was hoping to get just that. He wanted to get in the top 10 in Google or Yahoo offering 10% of sales generated from search engine optimization in return. Would you take the deal?

SEOmoz’s SEO Quiz

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

On Monday SEOmoz released an seo quiz that’s been taking a little heat ever since. The criticism is fair, but it’s still a fun quiz to take and the criticism does miss the point somewhat on why the quiz exists in the first place.
