At Digg, The Inmates Now Run The Asylum

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2007

During my routine travels through the blogoshphere yesterday I happened upon a post at Pronet by Muhammad, The Reason Why Digg Removed That Story, and after a read and saving the link for Friday’s This Week In SEO post, I promptly moved on to the next blog awaiting me. It wasn’t until this morning that I realized the revolt that was going on over at Digg about the story in question. Shows what I know huh?

Rumors And News From Social Media And Search

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Maybe it’s everyone posting more the week after SES or maybe it was just a big week for news, but when I looked at the links I’ve collected for tomorrow’s This Week In SEO post I realized I had gathered a lot more than usual and it was going to be hard to cut some. In order to keep the links tomorrow somewhat manageable I thought I’d offer some of them tonight in the form of three big stories.

Review Of The Webmaster-Talk Forums

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

I normally don’t do a lot of reviews, but Tim, the owner of Webmaster-Talk recently asked members with a blog to review the forum. Since Webmaster-Talk has given a lot to me over the last year I wanted to give something back to Tim and to the forum.

How Many Social Media Icons Is Too Many?

Tuesday, February 20th, 2007

As some of you know I’m working on a redesign of my site. Part of the reason for the new design is optimizing the site more for social media, including the use of bookmarklets at the bottom of posts. This afternoon I did some searching to find some icons I could grab and use in Photoshop to see how they fit with the design. I found the images I was looking for, but I also found a lot of negative sentiment about sites that use social media icons.

Digg And SEO Don’t Play Well Together

Tuesday, December 26th, 2006

You may have heard that recently many seo and marketing related sites are getting banned by Digg for the scandalous offense of being seo and marketing related sites.

I first came across the phenomenon earlier this month when Matt posted his URL Has Been Reported By Users And Cannot Be Submitted To Digg at This Time. At the time I didn’t know the reason for the ban nor did Matt, though I admit I had some suspicions. A couple of weeks later in the post script to 21 Traffic Triggers for Social Media Marketing, Brian Clarke of CopyBlogger fame mentions the post making the front page of Digg whereupon the editors immediately took it down.

Social Media Optimization (SMO): The Next Phase Of SEO

Tuesday, October 31st, 2006

I mentioned it my previous post, but the term social media optimization or SMO may be new to people and I thought it deserved more in depth coverage. SMO is a relatively new term to describe a practice that has been going on for awhile. You might notice that I’m not doing many of these things on my own site so this post is more of a do as I say rather than do as I do. I will be implementing many of these suggestions though, with a new redesign in the coming weeks and months and I am happy to say I do practice many of the rules of SMO, if not all of them yet.

SEO For The Social Web

Monday, October 30th, 2006

American sculptor Horatio Greenough coined the phrase “Form follows function,” which was later popularized by architects Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright. The principle behind the phrase has long been associated with modern architecture and now the phrase and it’s principle can also be applied to SEO.

Understand A Social Network Before You Join

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

A couple of days ago I was talking about social networks and how they can be a valuable resource to your website and business. One thing important to remember with networks is that each is different. As communities develop they form their own rules and their own internal language and before you join one it’s a good idea to understand how they operate and what makes them tick.

Benefiting From Social Networks

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Mention the term social network and sites like MySpace and Flickr might come to mind. Or maybe it’s social bookmarking sites like del.icio.us and Digg you first think about. Social networks though predate the internet by many years. Your local chamber of commerce is a social network as is your family and friends. Networking has always been a way to market a business and generate new leads and sales. The same offline networking used to generate business can be used to generate online business and even seo your site.

Forums, Blogs, And Comment Spam

Sunday, June 25th, 2006

When I first started getting comment spam on this blog I took it as a sign my blog had begun to arrive. I figured I must be doing something right to have at least gotten the attention of spammers. A couple months later and all I feel is completely annoyed by the amount of spam comments that are trying to get through.
