Last week I mentioned some issues I was having with my web host in regards to certain WordPress files using too much server resources. I also mentioned how my immediate solution was to move the site to a VPS. I’m happy to say the move is complete and wanted to give you a quick update about what I did and something I’m still planning to do.

A few weeks ago I published a post here on WordPress dropdown menus and began a small bit of promotion. I tweeted the new post, submitted it to a few design sites that ask for community news, and passed the word to a few friends. I went to bed proud of myself eager to check my stats the next day and see if I noticed an uptick in subscribers.
I awoke to find my site down, disabled by my web host. Oh joy.

Last week I took a look back and now that we’ve put the past aside it’s time to look ahead to the next 11 1/2 months of 2009. As I did last year I’ve set myself some realistic goals I’d like to accomplish and thought I’d share so we can all look back a year from now and either make fun of me for not doing what I set out to do or gather for one big pat on the back. Hopefully the latter.
If you read my last post looking back you’ll notice my goals for this year are mainly to finish some unfinished business from 2008. What I’d like to do in 2009 is:

C’mon Steve it’s already January 6th. Isn’t it a little late for one of these looking back, looking ahead posts? I know, I know. You may have noticed it’s been a little quiet around here lately. TheVanBlog has become something of ghost town (or maybe it’s a ghost blog) in recent weeks. They aren’t sexy, they seem ancient in web years, and they don’t get talked about as much as they once were, yet forums are still one of the best sources of quality traffic. Done right they bring consistent traffic month after month, traffic that does stick around and subscribe to your blog and inquire about your services.

Thought I’d give you all an update on the domain move. I think I’ll have everything done by tomorrow, but I’ll likely hold off on moving till sometime late in the day or evening on Friday. Things should be a little slower over the weekend and moving will probably be a little less disruptive at that time. While I’m doing what I can to ensure a smooth move I assume I’ll break a few things along the way and hopefully the weekend will allow some time to sort out the most major of breaks.
