Ciaran called to my attention the current situation with BBC correspondent Alan Johnston. On March 12th he disappeared on his way home from his Gaza City office where he’s been providing coverage of the Middle East for the past few years. He is feared to have been kidnapped and people around the world have been calling for his release. You can help easily enough by adding a simple button to your blog or site and spread the word.
Visit this page at the BBC site, grab the code, and add it to your site. You should see the button that appears to the right, which will also link to a page on the BBC site with more information. You can also sign an online petition asking that anyone with more influence step up their efforts to secure Alan’s immediate release.
The button was set up to honor Alan on his 45th birthday, which was this past Thursday (May 17th).
Ciran mentions how he blogs for pleasure, which allows him to play at being a journalist. I feel much the same way. I’d hardly consider myself a journalist, but I have great respect for the profession. It’s one thing to sit on your couch and blog your opinions and another thing to put yourself in dangerous situations so that the rest of us can know what’s going on. A free press is at the core of a free society and people like Alan play a vital role in ensuring freedom around the globe.
Please help spread the word, keep Alan in your thoughts, and hope for his release.
